Marco Spagnoli was born in Naples. He is a scriptwriter and director, as well as a cinema critic and journalist for various magazines and websites for film and events. In 2009 his documentary Hollywood sul Tevere was nominated for several awards, including theNastro d’argento and David di Donatello, Regarding his film Sophia!, Spagnoli said: “I wanted six actresses who ideally represented the time frame I was going to tell. Each corresponds, more or less, to an era in Loren's life. We were interested in having six different points of view on Loren's life with actresses of different ages and, in different ways, a bond of some kind with her, practical or supportive.”
