Rosa is a restless girl who lives with her grandmother and uncle in a remote Calabrian village. Her mother’s mysterious death when Rosa was a child casts a gloomy shadow on her present life. When she realizes she is trapped in the same predestined fate, she decides to betray her family…but when your family belongs to the 'Ndrangheta, the wrong move can be fatal. Based on the book Fimmine Ribelli - Come le donne salveranno il Paese dalla 'Ndrangheta by Lirio Abbate.
Francesco Costabile, born in Cosenza, attended the University of Bologna. In 2001 he made his first short, La sua gamba, and in 2006, his film Dentro Roma won the Nastro d'argento award for best short.
Regarding The Code of Silence, his first feature film, Costabile said: "The concept didn’t come from a peculiar real character but was rather inspired by the many stories in the book. Rosa embodies the multitude of women and voices in the book, summarizing all of these dramatic experiences. All the women that had the courage to break their blood tie and the codes of the ‘Ndrangheta."
