""a demonstration that our cinema knows how to look beyond the borders" - LA REPUBBLICA
PLOT: Autumn 1943. Rosa, fleeing bombed-out Berlin, reaches a small, isolated village near the eastern border. This is where her in-laws live and where her husband, fighting on the front lines, had instructed her to take refuge while awaiting his return. She soon discovers that the seemingly peaceful village hides a secret: within the bordering forest is Hitler’s headquarters, the Wolf's Lair. The Führer sees enemies everywhere; the fear of being poisoned is his obsession. One morning, Rosa is taken, along with other young women from the village, to taste the food prepared for him. Torn between the fear of death and hunger, the tasters form alliances, friendships, and secret pacts. Rosa, the Berliner, struggles to be accepted. But when she finally overcomes the distrust towards her, something happens that will make her feel guilty.
Based on the book At the Wolf's Table by Rosella Postorino.

DIRECTOR NOTES:
Silvio Soldini, born in 1958 in Milano, studied cinema at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. When he returned to Itay in 1982, he worked as a translator of American films and as an assistant director for ads. Soldini won both the David Donatello and Nastro d'argento Best Film and Best Director awards for Pane e tulipani and the Nastro d'argento Best Documentary award for Per altri occhi.

Regarding his film, Soldini said: "I love very much Rosella's writing and, above all, the main character, Rosa, a women full of humanity in her weaknesses and her instincts." Also "we filmed the majority of the scenes in Alto Adige, but the book was set in eastern Prussia where there are no mountains, therefore we could not take advantage of the scenery."
