PLOT: Giovanni, an Italian film director with a wife in therapy and a producer on the verge of bankruptcy, has lost his faith in the future. Like his protagonist, a standard-bearer for L'Unità and head of Quarticciolo's Communist Party chapter, he wants to correct the course of a world moving in the wrong direction. His wife has decided to invest in a degenerate young director, his daughter wants to marry a much older man, and then there's Netflix, pumping out "fast cinema" antithetical to his own.

Giovanni "Nanni" Moretti was born in 1953 in Brunico. In 1976, he debuted as director with his first feature film Io sono un autarchico, and in 1977 he came to the attention of directors Paolo and Vittorio Taviani who offered him a part in their film Padre padrone. During his career, he has received nine David di Donatello awards: two special awards, three for Best Film (Caro diario, La stanza del figlio and Il caimano), one each for best director, best producer and best actor. In addition, he has won eleven Nastri d'argento awards.

Regarding his films, Moretti said: "Platforms are good for series, films must be made for cinemas."
