Alessandro Azzarito was born in Asti. He studied at the University of Bologna and then at the workshop "Ipotesi Cinema", the film school founded by Ermanno Olmi at Bassano del Grappa. In 1994 he filmed Myriam, his first short documentary.

Regarding his film Rinaldo's Cherry Tree, Azzarito said: "Remaining faithful to the teachings of Cesare Zavattini, one of the most important figures in Italian neorealism who said "the objective is not to invent a story that resembles reality, but to tell reality as if it were a story,' I undertook this journey with Emanuele and Rinaldo.
