Giuseppe Bonito, born in Sala Consilina, began working as an assistant director. He made his directorial debut in 2012 with Pulce is not here, for which he was nominated for the Nastro d'argento award as Best New Director.

Regarding A Girl Returned, Bonito said: "I think that every viewer interprets the film in a different way: some will have found a message of hope in it, others may not have perceived it at all. That's okay. For me it's like putting a message in a bottle and leaving it at the seaside, hoping that someone can find it and read it.."
